My wife has a Mini Clubman Diesel and loves it. My 520d just died.

I’m debating a cheaper Mini Cooper S for me and then taking care of any deferred maintenance and bolting on as many JCW parts as possible. Does this make sense? Has anyone else gone this route?

As much as I’d love to DD a 944 or SM it just isn’t going to happen.

What about a 3 series diesel? And a 520D - wow, something we’ll never see in the states.

May I ask what happened to your E39? I’m thinking about getting a used diesel 5-series as my next car, so I like to learn as much about them as possible. We also already have two of them in the family, so I picked up a thing or two, over the years already. I could also recommend a good indie shop specialised on older BMWs, but it’s in Bavaria, so probably worthless to someone in Belgium.

Actually, for my next car I really want to get my hands on the new AWD Clubman. I totes approve of the FWD minis too though! They’re very fun cars

We’ve got a 2005 Cooper S pushing 115k miles and love it. It belongs to my fiancee, but my mother has got a 2014 cooper s with all of the bells and whistles. It is a much “nicer” car (it feels like a BMW product). However if I had to drive one every day I would take the 2005, as it’s much more fun to drive. The 05's suspension is nice and hard, the clutch grabs right off the floor, and I much prefer the power delivery from the supercharger. That all comes at a price though, road noise is terrible, ride is harsh etc. Both are manuals, everything about the 2014 is much nicer, but also much softer. Suspension is super soft, clutch is soft, and you get that sudden onset of turbo power.

My mother also had a 2012 cooper S convertible which was an automatic with paddles. Easily the worst one of the 3.

Happy shopping
